The reason I'm on this diatribe is because I have received more than one catalog from Hammer Nutrition http://www.hammernutrition.com/ in recent weeks. Yes, I did order from them awhile back. I pretty much like their Recovervite, but every other vitamins I can pretty much purchase at Henry's now. Anyhow, they quoted and pretty much disseminated an article/blog post by Matt Fitzgerald http://mattfitzgerald.org/blog/?p=213 about sugar and it's effectiveness or non-effectiveness in athletic performance. What I understood from Hammer Nutrition based on their opinion in my recent catalog is that sugar is the "demon."
Stay away....oooo, scarey shit as it is! Give me a break peeps. For one, sugar has been around since like forever and unrefined (if that is the way you want go) it is fine. Your body uses it, fast---period!
Now if your sitting around eating HO-HOs all day, then there is a problem in itself there.
Sugar certainly isn't the culprit of obesity. We as humans are, and our processed crap foods. As an athlete or lay person sugar facilitates the movement of nutrition into our cells. All carbs, whether white or dark as it were, are all processed the same frickin way. They are broken down to simple sugars that are expedited and transport nutrients into our cells, in layman speak. So, peeps sugar is not bad. In fact it is needed in cellular energy...aka in your body. Too much, is just like too much of anything for goodness sakes! Like grow a brain for cryin out loud.
K, too much sugar can make you insulin resistant (google it), too much fat, can cause serious heart issues, 1st of all leading to increased cholestrol. Too much protein can lead to heart issues and 1st and foremost kidney issues.
Basically everything in moderation. Enjoy the ride, but don't overindulge too often. I guess it just irritates me that certain corps are ready to jump on the band wagon with their own opinions, but in the mix of things it is really no big deal if all is in moderation.
